The scenic towns of Telluride and Mountain Village are connected by a stunning 12-minute gondola ride, the first and only free public transportation system of its kind in the United States. This popular attraction offers convenient access to hiking and biking trails during the summer and ski slopes in the winter. Passengers can board the gondola in either Mountain Village or Telluride, stop at the midway point (Station St. Sophia), and then continue to the other side.

Discover the Beauty of Telluride

When you ride the gondola, you get a front-row seat to breathtaking views from 10,500 feet. The journey from Telluride to Station St. Sophia involves an elevation change of 1,750 feet, and from Station St. Sophia to Mountain Village, it changes by 960 feet. Operating daily from 6:30 a.m. to midnight during summer and winter, the gondola offers extended hours on select event dates. The gondola closes briefly in late spring and fall for maintenance.

Boarding Stations

The gondola has three main stations where you can board and unload:

  1. Station Telluride (Oak Street): Access in Telluride.
  2. Station St. Sophia: Mid-mountain stop with access to Allred’s Restaurant & Bar, The Ridge Club, and ski resort trails.
  3. Station Mountain Village: Access in Mountain Village.

Additionally, a shorter gondola connects Station Mountain Village to Station Village Parking, where the free parking garage, Town Hall, and the Mountain Market are located.

Accessibility and Convenience

Accessible cabins are available; simply ask a gondola attendant for assistance with boarding. They can slow down the cabins for those with strollers and wheelchairs. Pet cabins are also available for well-behaved animals on leashes.

In winter, ski and snowboard racks are mounted outside the cabins, and gondola attendants assist with loading equipment. In summer, bike racks replace ski racks, and the attendants help load bikes.

Quick Facts

  1. Fast: Each cabin travels at 11 mph, with the ride from Telluride to Mountain Village taking 13 minutes.
  2. Free: The gondola is free to ride, supported by community financial sources.
  3. Green: The gondola operates using wind power purchased from San Miguel Power Association.

Gondola History

The Gondola was originally built to improve air quality in the region by reducing car traffic. Since December 1996, it has annually shuttled approximately 2.8 million skiers, snowboarders, mountain bikers, hikers, festival-goers, and commuters over the 10,500-foot Coonskin Ridge. Along with stunning views of the San Juan Mountains, Aspen-cloaked mesas, and sun-struck waterfalls, riders can also enjoy vistas stretching to the La Sal Range in Utah on clear days.
